iPhone 18 Dynamic Island Debate
Conflicting leaks have reignited speculation around whether Apple will finally remove the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro — or simply shrink it further. The latest reports suggest Apple is taking a far more conservative route than early renders implied.
Leakers Clash on iPhone 18 Design
The debate began after controversial leaker Jon Prosser shared renders suggesting the Dynamic Island would disappear entirely, replaced by a left-aligned punch-hole camera as part of an under-display Face ID system.
However, multiple established Apple supply-chain sources quickly pushed back. On China’s Weibo platform, tipster Instant Digital stated that claims of a left-side camera punch-hole were incorrect, describing them as the result of a mistranslation.
According to Instant Digital, the iPhone 18 Pro will feature an under-display infrared component on the left side — not a visible camera cutout. Shortly afterward, ShrimpApplePro and display analyst Ross Young independently corroborated this explanation.
What Under-Display Face ID Really Means
Face ID relies on multiple infrared components working together: a flood illuminator, dot projector, and infrared camera. Current OLED panels absorb and scatter infrared light, making full under-display implementation technically difficult without sacrificing accuracy.
As a result, Apple is expected to adopt a phased approach. Some Face ID components may move under the display, while others remain visible — likely resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island rather than a completely uninterrupted screen.
Supply Chain Signals a Gradual Shift
Industry reports indicate Apple is tightening display requirements for its premium models, combining LTPO OLED backplanes with under-display infrared (UDIR) technology. Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly the only suppliers currently capable of meeting these specifications at scale.
Despite years of rumors, Apple has consistently delayed major biometric redesigns until performance standards are met. Touch ID under the display, for example, has never shipped on an iPhone despite repeated speculation.
Apple’s Pattern: Function Over Flash
Introduced in 2022, the Dynamic Island was itself a compromise — blending sensor housing with usable interface elements. The iPhone 18 Pro appears to follow the same philosophy: reduce visual intrusion where possible, but avoid shipping incomplete technology.
For now, expectations of a fully hole-free iPhone remain premature. The most likely outcome is a refined, smaller Dynamic Island rather than its outright removal.
What This Means for Users
If Apple sticks to its usual cadence, the iPhone 18 lineup is expected to launch in September 2026. Design changes will likely be evolutionary, not revolutionary — especially when biometric security is involved.
For buyers planning ahead, slimmer Dynamic Island hardware could influence case design and screen protection. Komodoty’s upcoming iPhone cases are engineered to account for evolving camera and sensor layouts while maintaining slim profiles and reinforced cutout precision.
