Notification Access Expands

Third-party smartwatches can now receive full system-level notifications from iPhone. This includes messages, app alerts, and system prompts that were previously unavailable outside the Apple ecosystem.

Users no longer need an Apple Watch to view incoming notifications in real time. Any supported wearable can mirror alerts directly from the iPhone.

Interactive Replies Now Supported

The update adds interaction support. Users can reply to messages or react to notifications directly from third-party wearables.

This brings feature parity closer to Apple Watch functionality. Messaging apps, reminders, and other notifications can now be handled without reaching for the phone.

Live Activities Integration

iOS 26.5 introduces Live Activities forwarding. This allows third-party wearables to display real-time updates such as sports scores, ride tracking, and delivery progress.

This feature has been limited to Apple devices until now. The change allows non-Apple wearables to stay updated continuously without opening apps.

Simplified Pairing System

Apple is also testing a faster pairing method similar to AirPods. Using NFC-based proximity pairing, users can connect third-party devices with a single tap.

This removes the need to manually navigate Bluetooth settings and reduces setup friction for new devices.

Key Limitations

The update comes with specific restrictions. Notification forwarding works with only one wearable at a time. If a third-party smartwatch is connected, Apple Watch notifications are disabled.

The feature is also limited to EU regions and is not expected to roll out globally in the near term.

Privacy and Data Rules

Apple has added strict policies for developers. Third-party manufacturers cannot use notification data for advertising, user profiling, or AI model training.

This keeps notification content restricted to user-facing functions only.

For iPhone users in the EU, the update provides more flexibility when selecting a smartwatch. Devices outside Apple's ecosystem can now deliver a more complete experience.

This change also increases competition between wearable brands, especially as features like notification replies and Live Activities become standard.
