Apple's Touchscreen MacBook Pro Is Here: Price, Specs, and Release Date
Apple's long-rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro is now official, announced at the company's "Pro and Tell" event on October 28 alongside a new iMac and iPad mini. The MacBook Pro is Apple's first Mac with a touchscreen, built around a new OLED panel Apple calls the PROLED XDR Display, after years of reports pointing to exactly this kind of change.
The first touch-enabled Mac
The new MacBook Pro uses a tandem OLED panel with the touch sensor built directly into the display, paired with a redesigned hinge for added stability when tapping the screen. It's also the first Mac with a Dynamic Island, a feature carried over from Apple's iPhone and iPad lineups, used here to surface notifications and background activity without a separate notch.
Display specs that top the old model
The PROLED XDR Display reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, with support for P3 and Adobe RGB color for photo and video work. A nano-texture glass option, aimed at cutting glare in bright rooms, adds $150 to the price of either size.
Two sizes, two chip tiers
The touchscreen MacBook Pro comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, each available with the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip. The M5 Pro configuration starts at 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, while the M5 Max starts at 36GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, aimed at heavier video and 3D workloads.
Pricing by size and chip
Apple priced the 14-inch model at $2,899 with M5 Pro and $4,499 with M5 Max. The 16-inch model starts at $3,399 with M5 Pro and $4,799 with M5 Max, before any storage or memory upgrades, which push the top configurations considerably higher.
Battery, weight, and ports
Apple rates the new MacBook Pro for up to 24 hours of battery life. It weighs about 3 pounds in the 14-inch size and 4 pounds in the 16-inch size, and keeps three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6, so the move to touch and OLED hasn't come at the cost of connectivity.
Availability
Pre-orders for the touchscreen MacBook Pro opened the day of the announcement, with the laptop set to ship starting November 6, the same release window as the new iMac and iPad mini.
