Galaxy Z Fold 8 Flex Titanium Display: Samsung Shows Nearly Crease-Free Panel

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is on track to fix the oldest complaint about foldable phones: the crease. Ahead of the July 22 Unpacked event, Samsung Display invited a handful of journalists into its South Korean headquarters to show a new panel technology called Flex Titanium, and the early reports say the fold line on the inner screen is now close to invisible.

What Flex Titanium actually is
Flex Titanium combines two parts: a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate that sit beneath the OLED panel. Samsung has used titanium in earlier foldables for added strength, but this is the first time it has built the support layer from a titanium alloy with enough stretch to bend with the screen. The film is reported to be around 20 times stiffer than the plastic films used before, while measuring roughly 30 percent of the thickness of a human hair.

How it reduces the crease
The titanium plate supports the display module from below and bonds to it more tightly than previous designs, which removes the air gaps between the module and the plate adhesive. In the fold zone, Samsung Display uses a lattice structure finished with a laser hole process to keep the structure complete where the panel bends. The combined result is a visibly flatter screen that is also thinner and stronger than before.

Tested through 500,000 folds
According to the report from Tom's Guide, which saw the testing labs in person, robotic arms fold and unfold the panels 24 hours a day. At room temperature a panel is folded up to 500,000 times, with runs of up to 300,000 folds at 60°C and 60,000 folds at -20°C to cover extreme conditions.

Drop testing without a scratch
In a separate lab, a 21.7-gram metal ball was dropped onto the foldable panel from heights up to 50 centimeters, and the screen came away without a mark. Samsung Display says its test methods are modeled on real-world accidents, from drops to pressure from small hard objects.

Why the timing matters
Apple is widely reported to be entering the foldable market this September with its first folding iPhone. Samsung executives told the publication they welcome the competition, arguing that a smaller crease removes the biggest consumer objection and that more players will grow the whole category. Samsung has been shipping foldables since 2019, and it is treating display experience as its main edge going into this launch cycle.
