Article: Google Wallet Car Keys Add Roles

Google Wallet Car Keys Add Roles

Google Wallet is adding more control to digital car key sharing with three new access roles and a simpler way to move keys between a user’s own devices.

New sharing roles for digital car keys

The updated sharing system adds co-owner, guest, and service roles. Each one is designed for a different use case, making shared access more practical and more controlled.

The co-owner role gives the recipient the same level of access as the original digital car key. Guest access is better suited for family members or friends. Service access is intended for temporary handovers such as valet parking or vehicle servicing.

How the feature works

To share a key, users open Google Wallet, select the digital car key, tap Share Car Key, and then pick a person or app to share it with.

Before the key is sent, Google Wallet asks the user to name the shared key and review the available settings. These settings can vary depending on the vehicle model.

Easier key transfers between devices

The update also improves how digital car keys move across a user’s own devices. That should make switching phones or using multiple supported devices less awkward than before.

Compatible Android phones

Google Wallet digital car keys work on Pixel 6 and later models, including the Pixel Fold. The feature also supports Samsung Galaxy S21 and later devices, along with selected other Android phones running Android 12 or newer.

Car brands that support digital keys

Vehicle support still depends on the manufacturer. Brands mentioned as offering digital car key support include Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Polestar, Porsche, Rivian, Tesla, and Volvo.

What this update changes

This update makes Google Wallet digital car keys more useful in daily situations. Owners can hand over the right level of access instead of sharing one full-permission key for every scenario.
