iPad Mini 8: OLED Display, A20 Pro Chip, and Price Expected Today

The iPad mini 8 is expected to make its first appearance today at Apple's "Pro and tell" event in Los Angeles, with reports pointing to an OLED display and a new chip for the compact tablet. Apple has confirmed the event itself, but the iPad mini 8 details below are still reports rather than an official spec sheet.

An OLED screen, finally
The iPad mini has used an LCD panel since its last major redesign, so a move to OLED would be the biggest display change the line has seen. Reports describe the new panel as noticeably more vibrant than the current screen, which matches the jump other iPads have already made.

A newer chip inside
The iPad mini 8 is tipped to use the Apple A20 Pro chip, the same chip expected in the iPhone 18 Pro. That would be a meaningful jump from the A17 Pro in the 2024 iPad mini 7, which could matter for anyone using the tablet for gaming or heavier multitasking.

Smaller design tweaks
Alongside the display and chip, reports point to the front camera moving to a longer edge of the tablet and an improved speaker setup. None of these changes affect the iPad mini's compact footprint, which remains the main reason buyers pick it over a full-size iPad.

A likely price increase
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported pricing could start closer to $799, which would be about $200 more than the 2024 iPad mini 7's $599 starting price. Apple has not confirmed a price, so this figure should be treated as a report rather than a final number.

The first new iPad mini in two years
If the reports hold up, this would be the first iPad mini update since 2024, making today's event the first real test of whether Apple keeps the mini as a budget-friendly option or repositions it closer to the standard iPad on price. Current iPad mini 7 owners are unlikely to feel a huge difference from the chip change alone in daily browsing or video, so the OLED screen is likely to be the bigger draw for most buyers.

What else is expected at the same event
The iPad mini 8 is reportedly sharing the spotlight with a touchscreen MacBook Pro at today's event, which suggests Apple is treating this as a broader round of hardware updates rather than a single quiet product change.

Protect your iPad mini with a Komodoty case
A compact tablet like the iPad mini still deserves a case that keeps it scratch-free without adding bulk.
