Xiaomi 17 Ultra Camera Review

Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Leica Leitzphone: what matters

Xiaomi’s 17 Ultra is a photography-first Android flagship that’s not officially sold in the U.S. A special version, the Leica co-designed Leitzphone, adds camera-focused hardware controls and a Leica-themed interface.

For U.S. buyers, the main question is simple: do the camera gains justify the import risk?

Design and screen

The 17 Ultra uses a flat 6.9-inch OLED panel with a 1–120Hz variable refresh rate, high peak brightness for outdoor use, and dimming options meant for low-light comfort.

The tradeoff is the camera module. It’s large, circular, and can make the phone feel top-heavy. It also won’t sit flat on a table and can snag on pockets.

The Leitzphone leans into Leica styling and adds a control ring around the camera area for fine zoom control. The standard 17 Ultra comes in multiple colors, including a green option shown in review units.

Camera system: the reason to buy it

The main camera is a 50MP shooter with a 1-inch sensor. That combo is built for strong low-light shots and consistent detail.

This year’s telephoto is a 200MP lens that covers roughly 3.2x to 4.3x optical zoom (about 75mm to 100mm equivalent). With cropping, you can push much farther while keeping usable detail, especially in good light. The Leitzphone’s physical ring makes small zoom adjustments easier than tapping on-screen controls.

The third lens is a 50MP ultrawide meant for landscapes and group shots, with better color matching than many ultrawides.

Up front, the selfie camera steps up to 50MP.

Photography Kit Pro: optional, but useful

Xiaomi’s Photography Kit Pro adds three practical things:

  • A case with magnets designed for Qi2-style accessories (compatibility can vary by charger)
  • A camera grip with a shutter button and exposure controls
  • An extra 2,000 mAh battery via USB-C

One catch: on the Leitzphone, the case can block the adjustable ring.

Video and performance

Video features include 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps and 8K at 30 fps on the main camera. There’s also motion tracking autofocus and a Pro mode with LOG recording options.

Inside, Xiaomi pairs a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage. In real use, that means fast camera processing, smooth gaming, and quick app switching.

Battery and charging

Xiaomi fits a 6,000 mAh battery, aimed at two-day endurance for many users.

Charging tops out at 90W wired (with the right adapter) and up to 50W wireless. The large camera bump can make wireless charging finicky with some pads.

Software notes

HyperOS has an iOS-like feel in places, and the quick settings icons can be hard to read at a glance. The Leica-themed look on the Leitzphone is cleaner and more camera-centric.

The biggest annoyance is preinstalled apps that many buyers don’t want on a premium phone.

Price and U.S. buyer reality check

In the UK and Europe, pricing lands in premium territory (the 17 Ultra around £1,299 / €1,499; the Leitzphone around £1,799 / €1,999).

If you’re in the U.S., importing can bring tradeoffs: warranty limits, carrier band gaps, and support friction. But if your top priority is a camera-first phone with real zoom reach and hands-on controls, the 17 Ultra—and especially the Leitzphone—stands out.

If you’re shopping for a case that fits a big camera bump and a heavier top section, Komodoty is the kind of brand worth checking for a better day-to-day grip and pocket feel.
