Apple iPhone Duo Foldable Launches October

Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo, a $1,999 book-style folding iPhone that is scheduled to arrive in the US on October 23. Preorders begin October 16.

According to WIRED’s hands-on report, Apple’s first folding iPhone has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. That puts the unfolded screen close to iPad mini territory, while keeping the device compact enough to use as a regular phone when closed.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone Is Built Around Two Screens

The iPhone Duo uses a passport-style, book-like design rather than a tall, narrow fold. The outer display is intended for quick tasks, messages and one-handed use. Open it up and the inner screen is designed for larger apps, video, reading, multitasking and iPad-style layouts.

Apple says iOS adapts as the device opens, showing more content on the larger panel. Apps can run side by side, while the dock and key controls move to the side to preserve usable screen space. The phone can also sit partly folded on a surface for photos, video calls or hands-free capture.

Touch ID Returns, While Face ID Does Not

The most unexpected change is biometric security. The iPhone Duo reportedly uses Touch ID built into the side power button instead of Face ID. This is likely a practical space decision in a device that has to fit a hinge, two display assemblies and split battery cells into a thin chassis.

Apple also uses a titanium frame, Ceramic Shield protection and an IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating. The hinge includes a carbon-fiber metal plate beneath the display to manage bending stress and reduce visible creasing. Foldables have improved sharply since Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, but long-term screen durability and repair costs remain the parts buyers should take seriously.

Battery, Cameras and Apple Pencil Support

Apple claims the largest battery fitted to an iPhone so far. The company rates the Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, or up to 44 hours on the outer screen. The mixed-use figure is quoted at up to 24 hours per charge.

The dual 48MP camera setup skips a dedicated telephoto camera, so buyers who rely heavily on long-range zoom may find the iPhone 18 Pro range more suitable. The Duo does, however, use the outside display for subject previews and includes foldable-specific camera features such as hands-free group photos.

It will also support the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year. There is no built-in magnetic storage slot for the pencil, so it is best viewed as an occasional productivity accessory rather than something that is always attached.

Is the iPhone Duo Worth $1,999?

The iPhone Duo is aimed at buyers who want a phone and compact tablet in one device. Its price is steep, and foldables remain more complicated to repair than regular slab phones. iFixit has repeatedly highlighted how difficult folding handsets can be to service compared with conventional smartphones.

Still, Apple entering the category matters. Foldables have remained a small segment of the smartphone market, but Apple’s software ecosystem, carrier reach and upgrade base could make the iPhone Duo the device that pushes folding phones from niche curiosity to mainstream consideration in the US.
