Article: Apple's Camera-Equipped AirPods Pro Reportedly Suspended After Advanced Testing

Apple's Camera-Equipped AirPods Pro Reportedly Suspended After Advanced Testing

Apple's long-rumored camera-equipped AirPods Pro have reportedly hit a snag, with a well-known leaker claiming development on the project has been suspended. The claim follows a late-June report from Bloomberg that described the earbuds as being in an advanced testing stage, which makes the sudden pause a notable reversal.

What the camera AirPods were meant to do
The rumored AirPods Pro would carry tiny cameras built into each earbud stem, feeding visual information to Siri rather than capturing photos or videos for the wearer. Reported use cases include asking Siri about objects in view, such as identifying ingredients in a fridge or getting context on a landmark.

How far along the project had reportedly gotten
As recently as May, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described the earbuds as being in design validation testing, the stage where prototypes carry a near-final design and feature set. That stage typically lasts three to six months and precedes production validation testing, where larger batches are built to test assembly.

Why the pause may be happening now
No official reason has been given for the suspension. Possible factors include the ongoing industry-wide memory and component shortage, which has already pushed Apple to raise prices on MacBooks and iPads, along with unresolved questions about privacy expectations for earbuds capable of capturing visual data.

Design and branding still unclear
Leaks describe the camera AirPods as resembling the current AirPods Pro 3, with slightly longer stems to fit the camera hardware and an LED indicator to show when visual data is being captured. Apple has not settled on a name, though AirPods Ultra has been floated as one possibility.

Timing tied to the new Siri
The camera AirPods were originally expected in the first half of 2026 before slipping, since their visual intelligence features depend on the smarter version of Siri arriving with iOS 27 this September. Even before this suspension report, a launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup this fall was already considered the earliest realistic timeline.

A long road to this point
Rumors of camera-equipped AirPods date back to 2024, when analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first suggested cameras could improve spatial audio for the Apple Vision Pro. Apple later filed a patent in 2025 describing how AirPods cameras could work as proximity sensors, capable of recognizing an object's type as well as its distance from the wearer.
