We Put Midjourney and DALL·E to the Test for Recreating a Product Shot: Here's how it turned out!
In the digital world, tools like Midjourney and DALL·E are making waves by creating near-real images. Among the two, some folks find Midjourney a bit ahead in image quality, but DALL·E isn’t far behind with the right tweaking. We tested them out by trying to create lifestyle images for our Komodo iPhone 15 cases. Using the same instruction for both, we aimed to have images of male models holding our walnut iPhone 15 Pro wood cases. Here’s what we found:
Prompt Used: "Male model holding the walnut iPhone 15 Pro wood case like the Komodoty one shown here [referenced image below]"
Image of our signature Komodo Wood Case for the iPhone 15 Pro (Walnut)
Both images didn't quite nail our Komodo Wood iPhone 15 Pro case, possibly due to the flat lay style of the sample image (above). The design of the phone case veered from our Komodo wood case style; the shape wasn't right, the raised camera was missing, and it seemed to have a bumper. Additionally, some parts looked like stickers, and the case didn't show off our signature slim wood finish. Despite these details, the outcome was pretty impressive, showcasing the potential of AI in image generation.
Below, I've displayed the results along with key highlights.
Midjourney’s Result: Generated using Midjourney on Discord, here are the highlights:
- Proportion: Phone and model proportions were off.
- Detail: Phone case style does not match Wood grains on the case were missing.
- Camera Variation: The iPhone 15 camera showed 2 to 6 lenses in different images.
- Model Realism: Models looked realistic with a nice bokeh photography effect.
- Case Accuracy: Not all phone cases looked like they were for the iPhone 15 Pro.
DALL·E’s Performance: Images from DALL·E on Bing showed:
- Lighting: Beautiful and cinematic.
- Model Realism: Models looked AI-generated.
- Proportion: Phones and models seemed more proportionate in comparison to Midjourney.
- Creativity: Creative poses and angles to showcase the phone case.
- Case Similarity: The case looked more like the real Komodo phone case compared to Midjourney.
Looking closely, both platforms have their strong and weak spots. Midjourney does well with realistic human figures, while DALL·E gets creative with lighting and posing, which are key in lifestyle photography. In a direct comparison on different topics, DALL·E came out on top in two out of four rounds due to its flawless creations and better understanding of some abstract ideas, whereas Midjourney won with its realistic touch in some cases.
It's not exactly what we were looking for, but the path to perfect AI-generated lifestyle images looks quite promising. Both Midjourney and DALL·E show promise in different areas of image generation. Together, they could change the game in digital marketing and product photography. We’re not there yet, but with rapid advancements in AI and machine learning, the future looks bright!
